Research Extra Functions Schools
As part of InvestNL's Programmatic Approach to Educational Real Estate, BLOC conducted research into the opportunities for functional mixing within educational facilities. By integrating multiple functions into school buildings, sustainable, healthy, and flexible educational environments can be created. We substantiated this vision with references and developed a methodology to achieve these combinations.

Educational real estate in the Netherlands faces significant challenges. Many school buildings are outdated, suffer from poor physical conditions, and are not optimally utilized outside school hours. A whitepaper from the PO and VO councils highlights the urgent need for sustainable, healthy, and adaptive school buildings that respond to the changing needs of society.
School buildings can serve a multifunctional role by integrating functions such as physical education, daycare centres, and healthcare services. However, budgetary constraints and ambiguities in responsibilities often hinder the development of future-proof educational housing. Concerns about management, for example, can obstruct valuable combinations.
Sterrenschool het Universum in Almere
De vraag is hoe we schoolgebouwen slim kunnen inzetten als multifunctionele, toekomstbestendige ruimtes die meerdere maatschappelijke functies kunnen vervullen.
Targeted Efforts to Identify Key Opportunities and Challenges
In our research for InvestNL, we offer a solution by identifying opportunities that enable schools to better address societal issues. Functional mixing—the combination of multiple functions within a school building—is essential in this context.
Drawing from our experiences in Almere, where BLOC is involved in several projects related to a broader perspective on educational housing, we conducted targeted interviews and worked in rapid iterations with our client. This efficient approach led to a valuable document that provided the client with key opportunities and challenges related to functional mixing.
