Action Plan National Reserve
Located in the southern Veluwe region, De Ginkel is an ecologically valuable heath and forest area within the municipality of Ede. This area combines historical and ecological layers, where military history meets rich biodiversity and recreational appeal. The municipality of Ede and its partners recognized the need to relieve pressure on the ecosystem without compromising the recreational and cultural value of the area. We developed an integrated vision and approach to ensure a sustainable future for De Ginkel, preserving nature and heritage while accommodating the region's growing visitor numbers and recreational needs.

This project offers a model for managers seeking a sustainable future, seamlessly integrating nature, heritage, and recreation.A New Perspective for a Special, Colorful Place
De Ginkel is characterized by a unique ecosystem and rich cultural history. However, these qualities are under pressure due to increasing recreation and external influences such as military use. Stakeholders working in similar areas may recognize the challenge of preserving and enhancing both natural and cultural values.
BLOC’s Approach
The Area Plan for De Ginkel focuses on the following pillars:
- Area Vision and Program Plan: Development of a comprehensive plan that not only protects ecological and recreational value but also integrates them. The program connects core ecological qualities with recreational and educational zones, creating a natural zoning that provides peace in the area’s vulnerable parts.
- Nature Management and Recreation Zoning: Specific zones are designated to separate ecology and recreation where necessary, preventing disturbance to fauna and flora in sensitive parts of the area while maintaining a quality nature experience for visitors.
- Funding Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement: Collaboration with public and private partners within the Ede region has led to a widely supported funding model and planning process. This process prioritized local stakeholder involvement, contributing to support and long-term commitment to the project.
Relevance for Similar Projects
The results demonstrate how an integrated approach can enhance biodiversity, cultural history, and recreational value. Key outcomes include:e
- Ecological Sustainability: Restoration and protection of vulnerable habitats are ensured through controlled access and regulation of recreational routes.
- Cultural Preservation and Accessibility: Military heritage sites and natural elements have been made more accessible with informational facilities, allowing visitors to connect with De Ginkel’s historical narrative.
- Economic and Social Impact: The project has created new visitor flows, with recreational facilities benefiting the local economy as well.
With a holistic approach, the De Ginkel Area Plan offers a replicable model for other areas facing challenges in nature development and cultural management. For stakeholders seeking a balance between nature conservation and recreational development, this project provides valuable insights and practical solutions.
